A disapointing scoreline but Fabio takes away 15 ranking points from Mumbai a 2nd Round exit.

Fabio fails to qualify despite winning his first qualifying match up against a wildcard from Romania. In the second round he went on to lose to Huga Armando from USA 6-3 6-4. Fabio served 10 double faults which he will be very disapointed with.

The world number one Roger Federer will take on Novak Djokovic in what could be one of the greatest finals we’ve seen in years. Lots of people predicited that they would meet in the final and the same people are predicting an epic. Both players made fairly light work of their semi final opponents so they go into the final with great form. But as always its very difficult to look past Federer, who I think will win this one, 3-1. Best of luck to both players, I hope this lives up to the billing.
Fabio Unfortunate

Fabio was very unlucky that no other player pulled out of the US Open. He needed just one more player to pull out and he would have made it into the main draw. Schuettler who beat Fognini lost a very tight 5 set match against Paul Capdeville in the first round.

With rumours of Ancic pulling out, he needs one more very late withdrawl and he is in to the main draw.

Monfils pulled out with a hamstring injury meaning there was one Lucky Loser position in a lottery for one of the four highest seeded losers in qualifying today.
They were:
Robin Haase (NED) (2)
Fabio Fognini (ITA) (7)
Bobby Reynolds USA (9)
Wesley Moodie RSA (14)
And is it any surprise? It went to an American! Bobby Renolds. What a coincidence! Bad luck Fabio. Maybe another player will pull out tomorrow in which case he will stand a 1/3 chance of getting in the main draw. Bobby gets to play Tommy Robredo in the first round, whilst Fognini is left in limbo.
Schuettler Rolls Back the Years

Rainer Schuettler the former number 5 in the world beats Fabio Fognini 6-4 7-5. At the end of the sets, Fabio just couldn’t hold on to his serve. He seemed to be comfortable at the begining of the sets but faded as the set went on. Rainer broke Fabio serving to stay in the first set at 5-4 down and serving to stay in the match at 5-6 down, losing his nerve against an experienced player at vital times! So Schuettler is through to the main draw and Fabio has the slimmest chance of getting a Lucky Loser spot into the main draw. Fingers crossed.

Fabio Fognini beat Horacio Zabellos of Argentina in straight sets 7-5 6-4. He will at worse, have a chance of a lucky loser position in the draw. In the third and final round of qualifying Fabio plays the former number 5 in the world Rainer Schuettler. This is by no means an easy task. Schuettler won his first round of qualifying 6-0 6-0, so he must be in good form! Fognini needs another big performance to get into the main draw.

Former World No. 4 Tim Henman has announced he will retire after Great Britain’s Davis Cup tie against Croatia at Wimbledon next month. He’s giving it one last go at the US Open before graciously bowing out, still playing tennis at top level. Some had feared he might leave the professional scene in a low key event but there is nothing better to leave the tour on a high playing the top players. He’s been a great player for British tennis, he never quite won that elusive Wimbledon Trophy but he’s inspired everyone that’s supported him throughout the years.
